         Happy Birthday, Ms. Kim!

December 5, 2008

Dear Family and Friends of PDMSS,

Over the course of the last few years, PDMSS students have been trying to find ways to help others.  This year is no different.  We offer multiple ways to help others in need.  We hope that one or more of these opportunities are ones that will help begin a conversation about the importance of community and ways that we can all contribute that  have little to no cost.  It truly is empowering for a child to be able to participate in meaningful and heartfelt activities that help others.

Have your family find one gently used warm, clean blanket to bring to our blanket drive this week.

Have your family go through your closets and find one warm coat that has been outgrown that you wish to donate to our one warm coat drive.  (Coats of all sizes - Children - adult are welcome).

Have your child bring a non  -perishable canned food item for our Canned Food Drive (last day is Monday, Dec. 8).

Have your family go through the couch cushions to find loose change for Pennies for Peace.

As a family, go online to select and send a free holiday card to one of our American Troops serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Have your child select a new toy to donate to the Children's Lifesaving Foundation toy drive.

Whatever you decide to do with your child, know that it will create opportunities to be together as a family and engage in an activity that is selfless and has a lasting positive impact on the giver and the receiver. These are the stories your child will surely remember when they get older, and the concept of 'paying it forward' will live on not only during the holiday season, but all year long.

Thank you for caring and making a difference each day.

Warmest regards,

Chi Kim
Principal

Winter Choral Concert DVD

Thank you to the many parents who joined us for our first Holiday Concert of the Season.  The Third - Fifth grade students were fabulous.  Your generous contributions to our Direct Donation Drive is the only reason we are able to provide this opportunity for our children.  Amy Loch, Choral Music Teacher, has been a wonderful teacher for our children.  The concert was brilliant and so festive. Special thanks to Joellen "Cha Cha" Friedkin and Kathy Henn for providing the accompaniment and our decorating committee, Kasey de Varennes and Andrea Lanier.

We are looking forward to next week's concert for our Kindergarten - Second Grade concert led by Ann Lambert.

Videos are available for purchase.  To get your copy, please fill out the order form, and return it with a check to the Office.  Your DVD will be mailed directly to your home or specified mailing address within approximately two weeks of the final performance.

One Warm Coat Community Service Project

Winter is approaching, and no one should have to go without such a basic necessity as a coat!  During the week of December 8th to 12th, the PDMSS Girl Scouts of Troop 512 will be collecting clean, reusable coats, jackets, and sweatshirts to assist the One Warm Coat community service effort.

The program is a wonderful way for you and your family to pass along coats, jackets, and sweatshirts that you no longer need.  All sizes are welcome.  Just drop off your donations in the bin in front of the office throughout the week.  The Girl Scouts will also be collecting in the mornings on December 8th and 9th at drop-off. Donations will be given to schools and other youth-serving organizations in the Los Angeles area.

For more information on this project, go to www.onewarmcoat.org .

Sign up for eScrip at the Book Fair

We have a caring community of businesses that are willing to donate a percentage of sales when we shop with them. Please come to the eScrip table at the Book Fair next week and join our eScrip program, which costs nothing, and only takes a few minutes of your time.  Whenever you shop with your registered cards, our school earns money!   Bring your cards--you can register a How’s or Vons club card, credit, debit, and Macy's cards.  Both parents may join, as well as friends, neighbors, and other family members such as aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

Taking a bit of time now will ensure that our school will earn far into the future.  If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Annis at pdmssescrip@yahoo.com.

STUDENT COUNCIL CORNER

Dear Parents,

During this week's student council, we all got into a circle and told each other one thing we like about our school. I am pleased to report that many people chose Math as their favorite subject. We also wrote letters to the animal shelter we are donating our lemonade money to. We earned over $650.00 as we are proud to announce. We're thinking about having Family Sports Day again because it was a big success. Nothing is final. We are also considering having a Pennies for Peace update. Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,
Eden E., Miles M., Natalie A., and Isobel A.

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS AND LINKS

Malibu Middle & High School Campus Improvements Project Community Meeting

Monday, December 8, 2008
6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. – MHS Auditorium

Dear Parents and All Interested Parties,

You are invited to attend a special Community Meeting on Monday, December 8, 2008 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the Malibu High School Auditorium. The purpose of the meeting is to acquaint you with the Measure BB project and the approval process. In 2006, the voters of Malibu and Santa Monica passed the Measure BB facilities bond of which Malibu Middle and High School has been allocated $30.375 million construction dollars for campus improvements. In my October 2008 Principal’s Message, I outlined the project’s scope that includes improvements such as a new library, new and modernized classrooms, new science labs, athletic facilities’ enhancements and improved outdoor spaces.

Now we are ready to provide you with more information about the project. The meeting will include a presentation of the proposed project and an opportunity for audience input. The presentation will specifically review the project’s scope and provide further details on its components that have been designed so far and our next steps. In addition to MHS parents, we have invited other members of the community including our local neighbors, as we want to share these exciting new changes with them. Comments and suggestions on the project are welcomed. Our goal is that you leave the meeting with a good understanding of the proposed improvements to the campus. We hope that you will attend this meeting so we can share what exciting improvements are planned for the campus.

Malibu Middle and High School provides outstanding educational opportunities. By passing Measure BB, you expressed your desire to provide our students with facilities that will foster a high-caliber education. It is an exciting time at the campus as our current success motivates us to move forward with plans that continue the wonderful evolution of this public school. We look forward to seeing you on Monday, December 8 at 6:30 p.m.

Sincerely,
Mark O. Kelly, Principal

It only takes 10 seconds to give a heartfelt thanks to our troops!

If you go to this web site, www.LetsSayThanks.com, you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to a member of the armed services.
