Dear Family and Friends of PDMSS,

The Great Shake Out at 10:15 on 10/15 went smoothly. Teachers reported that the students completed the drill and did an outstanding job following directions. They know how to duck, cover, and hold on. Emergency drills help our students and staff practice important safety procedures so that if an actual emergency should arise, we remain calm because we are prepared.

Friday was an exciting day. Students were able to learn about how red wiggler or tiger worms enrich the soil by producing castings after they consume green waste. Students observed and held these small, but miraculous creatures. We will begin feeding the worms and adding our appropriate lunch scraps after our lunch times. Students also planted seeds in individual pots and began the steps of starting our winter kitchen garden. Thank you to Sadie Barish and all the garden parents who helped our Buddy Classes. Next week, individual classes will plant vegetable starters and seeds in the garden during their individual gardening times (NOT on Friday).

Now that the regular routines have been established, there are some areas that need to be improved. Each day, there are more students tardy. (This week we had 55 tardies!!!) It is imperative to have your child here at school on time. Timely (8:25 start time) and regular attendance is directly correlated to student achievement and connectedness to school.

The second area that needs improvement is after school traffic. Please do NOT park your car (and remind your babysitters, nannies and grandparents) in the moving queues on Grayfox Street and in the parking lot. When no one parks, the lines move and are complete in 10-15 minutes. When we have parked cars, it takes 20-25 minutes! Also, please know that we will NOT allow children to cross Grayfox street while you park on the other side of the street. It is dangerous. We know that you will do your part to keep all of our students safe by following the traffic procedures and by following the agreement that you signed at the beginning of the school year.

Dr. Susan Samarge Powell will be here on Monday as our guest principal. As a reminder, last year you were informed that the Point Dume Principalship was reduced to 80%. She will be here to ensure safe administrative oversight of PDMSS.

Have a lovely weekend with your family.

Chi Kim, Principal
