POLICIES and PROCEDURES

ATTENDANCE

Regular daily attendance at school is necessary for all students to benefit fully from the educational opportunities provided by our instructional program. All aspects of our curricula emphasize interactive, hands-on experiences that are adversely impacted when students are not at school participating daily. Class activities and assignments are such that they are not easily replicated. The work can be made up but the experience is lost.

ILLNESS

If your child is ill and must remain at home, please notify the school. The absence will be recorded as an excused absence though the school will receive no funds for the child that day. For absences longer than two days, a parent may call and obtain assignments for the work missed. Students will have the same number of days they have been absent to make up work missed during an illness. Readmission after an absence requires a signed note from parents.
The state of California calculates the amount of monies that it provides to school districts based on the Average Daily Attendance (ADA). The Pt. Dume Marine Science School does not receive monies for excused absence due to illness. Physical presence is now required for the district to receive the ADA.

NON-ILLNESS RELATED ABSENSE

The school calendar provides for vacation time throughout the year. Please refer to the Parent Guide & Calendar distributed by the School District at the beginning of each school year and plan vacations in conjunction with scheduled school holidays.

TARDIES

Children learn punctuality and respect for their own and other's time from their parents and adult role models. Being late to class is an abbreviated form of absence that is stressful for the child and very disruptive to fellow students and the teacher who have already begun the instructional day.
