Facility Improvement Projects
Dear Point Dume Marine School Families and Friends,
As the principal representing our distinguished staff, it is our privilege to guide your child on his or her elementary journey at Point Dume Marine Science School (PDMSS). Our mission is to empower all students by balancing academic excellence and the arts to become globally conscious citizens who shape our world by making positive, innovative, and responsible choices. Our K-5 school consists of 215 students and is located in the heart of beautiful Point Dume, Malibu. PDMSS is a California Distinguished School (2010, 2014) and ranked in the top 5% of schools statewide. Through attention to rigor, relevance and positive relationships, we provide the foundation for staff, parents and community to continue to build a world-class school for each child who enters our doors.
Our highly qualified and professional staff of teachers and support staff work collaboratively to ensure that each child is afforded the highest quality, well-rounded academic program that bridges classroom learning with the real world. Likewise, our after school programs provide students a wide variety of enrichment activities. Quality after school programs such as the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu, Chess, Cartooning, Yoga, Crazy Chemistry and Lego Robotics ensure students are engaged and active even after the dismissal bell. At PDMSS, we keep the lights on for learning!
Relevance on Instruction:
Meaningful, interesting and relevant instructional experiences will be at the heart of daily life at PDMSS. Arts, technology, marine science excursions, assemblies and performances provide students the necessary avenues to explore, discover and learn! In addition, Point Dume Marine Science School has an integrated marine and environmental science program that begins in kindergarten. Being located less than a mile from an environmentally sensitive state park and fragile oceanic eco-system allows us the opportunity to educate our students both inside the classroom, in the marine science lab located on campus, and outside in the local marine habitats, effectively bridging learning with real word applications. Our environmental science goal is to model sustainability for our planet. We have installed solar panels on our campus and advocate for environmental actions to save our planet via beach cleanups, zero-waste lunches, reducing, reusing, and recycling, creating and sustaining our organic edible garden, and being a Monarch Butterfly Way Station.
Our relationship goal is simple: To make sure every student feels important and included through knowing each student by name, strength and need. Each morning our student council leads all students and parents in the Pledge of Allegiance and our school cheer. This unity-building assembly contributes to a sense of belonging. In addition, teachers conduct classroom meetings and positive choices are rewarded through fun assemblies and family events. At PDMSS our motto of “school, fun and friends” is alive from the beginning to the end of each day.
On behalf of our staff, we are pleased you have chosen PDMSS for your child. Our theme of the “3 R’s: rigor and relevance rooted in positive relationships” epitomizes our daily goal of creating the best possible educational experience for your child.
Chief Sea Otter,
Principal Mark Demick
